Since college, I have been deeply interested in yoga, always treating it as a form of exercise for fitness and body sculpting. It wasn’t until I met Karina that I came to appreciate the profound and expansive world of yoga. Its expansiveness lies in yoga being a lifestyle that reconnects us to our authentic selves, and its depth lies in yoga serving as a key for inner self-exploration.

During any asana practice, Karina constantly reminds her students to bring awareness to every movement in the present moment. Through her guidance, I’ve learned that it’s possible to maintain mindfulness even in motion. As a result, every 30-minute practice session feels almost equivalent to a 30-minute meditation.

The greatest challenge for me in practicing the Warrior Pose is learning how to hold a pose for an extended period of time. I truly appreciate that Karina always provides foundational and advanced variations of poses, allowing students to choose based on their ability. She frequently reminds us, “Assess your limits and choose your poses accordingly; don’t push yourself too hard.” This has been an important lesson for me, as I’ve almost never injured myself during yoga practice under her guidance.

While learning each pose, I’ve trained myself to avoid impatience and over-ambition. Starting with basic movements, I focus on holding each pose for a period of time. After several days of practice, I’ve noticed not only improvements in my endurance but also that attempting advanced poses becomes less strenuous. It’s amazing how adaptable the human body can be!

While holding a pose for an extended time, Karina’s advice to “bring awareness to every moment” has worked wonders for me. Awareness allows me to observe my inner drama: from a state of calm, hearing my breath and holding my body steady, to the discomfort that makes my body stiffen, and the anxious thoughts about how much longer I can endure. Beneath the stillness of an outward pose lies a torrent of thoughts and emotions. Yet, through the practice of present-moment awareness, I’ve surprisingly been able to humorously watch my self-directed inner play unfold from a detached perspective.

Moreover, practicing the Warrior Pose has taught me the power of “slowing down.” To my surprise, holding still and maintaining a pose can make me sweat more effectively than doing quick, repetitive movements. Through consistent practice, staying mindful in motion has helped me become more attuned to subtle changes in my body and deepened my understanding of myself.
